Stoneware's webNetwork is product designed for organizations that are moving to a private cloud computing model where applications and services are increasingly web-based. These organizations see a move to web technologies as strategic in order to simplify management, scale, and reduce costs associated with the end device.

Accelerating the Move

There are three significant market forces accelerating the move to private and public cloud computing: web applications, decoupling, and the shift to centralized computing models.

The first factor is the growing number of web applications entering the market each day. Eight out of ten enterprise applications purchased or developed by organizations are based on web technologies. The reason is simple, web applications are centralized, scalable, and have little or no client-side dependencies. As the underlying application technology changes to web, the definition of a desktop will change as well.

The second market factor is the "decoupling". When the desktop is decoupled from the operating system it gains the freedom to move from device to device. This factor is significant due to the fact there are many new products entering the sub-notebook market such as netbooks, thin clients, and smartphones. With the desktop decoupled, users are fee to access their desktop from a wide variety of devices.

Finally, the shift away from a client-centric computing model is underway. Thousands of lives and millions of dollars have been spent by organizations attempting to tame the desktop world. The cost of managing desktops, deploying software, and applying application updates has gone out of control. Organizations are looking back to the future where applications were centralized inside the computer room and the client took the form of a dumb terminal.
